Wednesday 2/11/09 - Today, I witnessed the spaying of a cat. It was one of the most amazing things I have seen. My doctor allowed me to video tape the full procedure on my phone. First, he cut an incision on the cat's stomach. Then, he fished around for the uterus. Once found, the uterus, filopian tubes, and ovaries were pulled of the body. Then, after carfully stitching up arteries, the doctor made a quick snip to extract the uterous, causing a squirt of blood to eject from the cat's limp body. :)
Tuesday 2/10/09 - Today, the vet office was quite slow. We mostly observed animals getting their usual vacinations. A puppy was rushed in after its owner left it alone by the pool for 4 hours. When the woman came out to her pool deck, she found the puppy's ears and gums blue from lack of oxygen. The puppy had fallen into the pool and nearly drowned. Somehow, he found his way out of the pool, which is very rare for dogs. When the dog was brought in, we heard a crackle in its left lung. We kept it overnight just to make sure that it was ok.
Monday 2/09/09 - Today, I went to the vet office and found out that it was so slow that the doctor wanted me to leave and come back around 3, after their lunch break. On my break, I went to go get a carwash and pick up my friend to bring him home from school. Then, I went back to the vet and observed a cat with a sort of dermititis disorder. There was also a constipated cat that had not used the restroom in two weeks. So, my doctor took the forcepts and rammed it up its rectum to extract the stool.
Tuesday 2/17/09 - Today, I saw an itchy cat. The doctor rubbed some anti itch cream on the cat's buttocks. Then, we had a deaf lady come in with soup and cat throw up on her shirt just to get her two cats' nails trimmed.
so i like how you dont try to hide anything about it. you just say it no matter what. it is kind of funny. i didnt really know that you wanted to be a vet or had an idea of becoming a vet until this internship. its pretty cool and you will make a great vet. maybe cocoa can be one of your clients!
Wow, you're pretty explicit there. I guess that's how the job is though. I'm pretty nervous about bringing my kitty in to be spayed, but she's getting to be the age. Are they really careful about it? I don't want her to get hurt, haha.
wow, seems like you are having a blast at your internship... dealing with animals and their owners seems like a tough job...nothing id be willing to do.
wow ryan that sounds very intersting.. its good to know that i have someone who knows what goes on everyday in a vets office.. keep it up!! yu 'll be amazed!!
Last Monday, I went to my internship and had fun helping to file some of the files. The files were color coordinated according to the dates of the patient's last visit. Sometimes it is good to just sit down and do a desk job. I've found that for the majority of the time spent at the veterinarian's office, I am standing up and I am active. Sometimes, standing up for hours on end becomes very tiring.
Last Tuesday, I went to my internship, but it was very slow. There were hardly any appointments scheduled and there were no walk-ins. I left early because it was so boring.
Last Wednesday, I went to my internship and it was surgery day! There was a neuter on a cute boxer. I LOVE boxers and I felt so bad for him. I played with him before his little procedure and he seemed so nice and playful. Then, after his procedure, he repetitively tried to get up and overcome his anistesiea. On his attempts to get up, he hit his head on the floor and wall and I felt so bad for him!
I know what you mean about the desk job thing. At my internship at the hospital sometimes we get a lot of new admissions and after running around and being on my feet for so long I definitely get tired and just want to sit down. It gives you a chance to take a breather and just relax for a moment before you have to start running again. It gives your feet a chance to rest too. :)
I read your earlier blogs and your internship sounds very interesting. I can't believe that puppy fell in the pool though! I'm so glad it found its way out. This type of story kind of makes me angry though. People need to be more responsible with their pets!
I agree Jillian! Some people are not responsible enough to handle owning pets. Take yesterday for example. There was a cute 10 year old yellow lab that was perfectly health with the exception of a small vaginal mass. It had not visited the vet in 7 years and the owners just expected Doc to simply fix it for free. The surgery would have been very extensive, involving a procedure that would require the doctor to actually go through the abdomen to remove the mass. It would cost roughly $2000. Unfortunately, if the owners would have been responsible, they would have had the dog either spayed when it was younger and this issue would have NEVER happened, or they would have had the dog in for multiple visits over the past few years and this problem would have been detected.
Ok, so yesterday was a very busy day. We did not get done with surgeries until 5:00 pm! In scheduled surgery, there was 2 or 3 removals of masses, a spay and a neuter, and then i witnessed for the first time a cat getting declawed. It is a devastating experience. I had just became comfortable with neuters and figured that declawing a cat would be nothing of a bother to me. I was WRONG.
They don't cut out the nail like many people assume. They actually cut of their little fingers/toes from the joint of the topmost segment of the finger/toe. When the doctor did this, I was COMPLETELY SHOCKED. I actually started to feel weak in my legs so I rolled up a chair and sat down. The first paw was not too bad. But the second one actually squirted blood!
Another interesting thing that happened was a pregnant chihuahua was rushed in for help on the delivery. She was 3 years old and this was her third litter. She had been in labor since 1 am and needed help. Doc took x-rays and found that there were five very large puppies in her. I saw the x-rays and noticed that the heads of the puppies were far larger than the pelvis. This birth was not going to happen without a c-section. Unfortunately, the family that brought the dogs in were not willing to pay for that kind of surgery and decided to get her a shot to induce contractions. Doc gave her the shot and told the owners to rush home and get her ready for the birth. The whole staff predicts that the mother will not survive and the puppies will have a slim chance of making it.
wowzers. Alot of surgries you do. Is that exactly what you want to do? Surgries? or do you want to be a vet person who like chills with the animals and like preps them?
OMG!!!!!!! I am not stupid but for real i did not kno that dogs were taken the ER for a c-section. But its a bit sad that ppl have pets and are not willing to go to the extreme step necessary to help the animal.
Wow Ryan, sounds like you are getting a lot of experience just from your time at your internship. By having this opportunity, it will help you a lot when you major in it in college. I think you will make a great veterinarian. Good luck BEAST NAMED BATTIES haha.
I heard u r having alot of fun at ur intern. I miss everyone there. Yet at the same time i dont cuz i just really dissliked the amoosphere there. Yet I hope that is what you want to do and I hope u enjoy the restr of the weeks u have there.
Today, I was able to observe one of the most gruesome procedures I have seen here. An 80 pound black lab came in for a spay and mass removal. Since ive been hear since January, I have become familiar with spays and have become less discusted with them each day. The tumor, however, was a completely different scenario.
It was on the dogs left lip, near the nose and covering various whiskers. As you can imagine, this area is very sensitive and can be very risky to work on. After cutting deep into the flesh, the doctor uncovered a tumor that went deep into the lip, almost all the way through. In this procedure, the doctor uncovered many whisker folicules while showing me where they are located, what they look like, and what they were. In mid surgery, he found a blood vessel in the middle of the tumor. After his blade sliced it open, blood flowed EVERYWHERE. I was afraid it was going to squirt! Although the results of the biopsy are not reported yet, the vet tech, Judy, sliced open the specimen when the procedure was done and found that it was made of pus. Usually, that means that the mass was simply an infection, probably caused by the whisker folicules. Hopefully, the specimen will come back with a negative report of cancerous material. :)
RE: Jasmyn: yea! I know about the laser option and how it is much more humane. Unfortunately, my veterinarian office has not been able to get the equipment yet. Surely, they will be able to purchase it in the next few years. :)
RE KATIE: yea, I do want to be the actual veterinarian in the office, which means I will be doing surgeries, administering medicine, and such. I probably would rather be a vet tech, which are the ones who "chill" with the animals and prep them for surgery, but the pay difference is a huge concern. Vet techs are usually paid hourly and make roughly $20-30k a year. Doctors... well... lets just say they make ALOT more.
I also like how vet techs require far less schooling. I could possibly be certified as a vet tech in as little as two years. To get a masters in Veterinary Medicine, it would take about six years. And to get my full out PhD, it would take roughly eight to ten years, in addition to a few years of residency.
The staff had a meeting today and I got to play receptionist for a full hour by myself!!!! and believe it or not, it was not that bad. I was very busy with phone calls and continuous customers coming in to pick up prescriptions, medication, schedule appointments, and even put a dog down. I think I handled myself pretty well and I hope I made the Doc proud. :)
Well, Mr. Batties, it sounds like you would make a very good receptionist! Haha being one is very hectic and if you could really deal with it all day then maybe you should be one...Anyways it sounds like you are getting very entrenched in the world of a veterinarian and I hope you continue to pursue this career in college because it sounds like you really like this field of study.
I am sure you made the doctor proud, how could you not your "POOKALICIOUS", he better recognize...anyways sounds very interesting, sounds like your having fun. So, have you decided if this is what you definently want to do with your life?
RYAN!!!!!!!!!! your presentaion was Awsome I loved it! Truth is I kibnda wish I stook around our intern but the ve field didnt apeal to me very much. Im really happy you enjoyed your intern though, you really know what your talking about. And no matter what I know you'll make a great Vet someday. You did great im happy you liked your intern! =)
being the receptionist can be fun at time. however, whenever i would try to help out in labor and delivery i sually had to find a nurse immediately because alot of the questions that patients were asking were either personal or i could not answer, seeing as im not a nurse ha. glad your internship was better this time around.
I felt like I learned alot about veterinary animals during my internship. It was alot of fun. I'm going to keep repeating what I am writing because no one even reads these. I had so much fun at my internship. I learned alot. I had a good time. We did alot of stuff with the animals. Skittles. Captain Crunch. That is what I like. Yea, delicious. I thought it was REALLY funny when we were doing a surgery on animals and the vet techs would be eating their lunch.

I thought it was hilarious when the vet techs would be expressing anal glands and eating lunch at the same time. that is so disgusting. Pop Tarts.Kit Kat.
