Jillian-Rose Tricarico - Peace River Hospital

  1. I'm pretty behind on my blogs since I haven’t been in the class all week but I finally started my internship at Peace River Hospital in Pediatrics last Monday. I was really unsure about my internship at first because the very first day wasn’t all too exciting and I didn’t get to do much. I just got acquainted with all the nurses and sat in the nurses' station while they answered phone calls, updated patients’ charts and spoke to doctors on the phone. There were only two patients so I was really worried it would be like this everyday and I wasn’t going to like it. It turned out that the next day was super awesome!! About 5 kids had been admitted since the previous day so there was a lot to do. I was able to shadow Nurse Laura (who was voted nurse of the year!) and watch all the cool stuff she did with the kids. The coolest thing I was able to watch was the admission process of a teenage girl who had been having stomach problems and had been throwing up a lot. I watched the nurse as she did a head to toe exam, asked the girl and her mother medical questions and then as she checked the girl’s vitals which included: listening to her heart and lungs, checking her blood pressure and heart rate and etc. I was even able to watch as she did the girls IV!! I thought that was the best part! Needles and blood don’t bother me at all so being able to watch the nurse draw her blood and set up an IV line was really exciting! :) The first week in my internship was a lot of fun and was an awesome experience. I love it! :D

  2. The next couple of days in my internship were just as fun and interesting. I was able to watch more admissions and actually spend more time with the patients. I absolutely love kids but seeing them sick is really sad so it was nice to know I was able to help them. There were two particular patients admitted in the same day that I spent a lot of time with; a three year old little girl who was admitted for possible pneumonia and an eight year old girl who was dehydrated and had bronchitis. The three year old was developmentally delayed so it was difficult for the nurses to do a physical exam or anything with her for that matter. I was able to help though by getting her to change into the hospital gown she needed to wear and by distracting her with coloring books while her grandmother answered the nurse’s questions. I was also able to help the other little 8 yr old girl that had been admitted. She had to get blood drawn and an IV line set up. She was really scared that it would hurt so she began crying before the nurse even put the needle in her arm. I was able to comfort her through the process and keep her calm.
Its sad to see the kids scared and upset when we have to take them into the exam room to do all the IV stuff but I always remind myself that it is the only way that they will get better and become healthy again.

  3. Although today was a slower day it was still very interesting. A little boy almost two years old was admitted for asthma problems. He was really upset and was definitely not feeling well. It was really difficult for Mary Ann, the RN I was shadowing today, to hear the mother’s answers to the questions she asked. The little boy kept crying and nothing would quiet him down. Then we had to do an IV on him and that made him even more upset. The nurses showed me how to use a sheet as a papoose to keep the boy still so he wouldn’t squirm while the nurse drew the blood. I was able to watch and help by handing her things and keeping the boy still. Then the nurses let me bring all the blood samples, the blood culture and the mucous sample from his nose down to the lab so it could be tested. Even though I get to watch a lot of blood being drawn, it never gets old because all the nurses do it the way that is easiest for them so it's interesting to see their different preferences. It is also interesting to see the blood drawn from different places in the arm as well. I even found out that usually for babies the IV and the blood are drawn from the veins in the feet so that the baby can’t pull it out. One of the nurses even told me that sometimes for infants if the veins are too small when they are first born that the veins in their heads can be used to get blood or do an IV. I was really surprised to hear this but Nurse Lisa explained that even though it sounds horrible it doesn’t hurt as bad as you would expect. Plus because the baby is so young they don’t even remember the experience once they are older. I learn so much everyday from the nurses and they are awesome to work with. : )

  4. Babies have blood drawn from veins in their feet? I didn't know that! I'm glad that you really enjoy your internship and that you get to shadow a lot of nurses since you are learning different things.

I totally agree with you about feeling sad for the patients, I absolutely adore children as well :) After awhile you definitely have a soft spot for them in your heart and it's cool that you're getting the experience to help them and calm them down as well.

  5. I finished my internship about a week ago. My last week there was kind of slow. Not too much went on compared to the busy week before. One specific patient I was able to observe was a two year little boy who was admitted for asthma and breathing problems. He had started to develop a small rash while he was in the hospital. Nurse Laura showed me different types of rashes on the computer and explained the differences in each and how they are spread. She showed me the differences in appearance of poison oak, hives, scarlet fever, eczema, and ring worm.
Another patient I was able to observe was a four day old infant that was admitted for jaundice. The baby had to be treated with photo therapy by being put under bright lights. I thought it was really interesting that they have machines and technology like this that can cure health problems. The photo therapy didn’t bring the baby any pain; the baby actually seemed to enjoy it as if she was just tanning in the sun and relaxing.
My internship at Peace River Hospital in Pediatrics was only for two weeks. Although I wasn't there very long, I had an awesome time and I learned a lot. I was able to see first hand all the things nurses must do to care for their patients. The nurses were really great to work with. They were very patient and answered any questions I had. I’m hoping to extend my internship or possibly begin another internship at the hospital in the labor and delivery unit.

  6. wow, Jillian that's great. So, I guess you have decided to pursue a career in the health field, do you know what exactly? It was very fasinating to me that they have such technology as well. That is great that they could do photo therapy for the baby causing to it no or discomfort. bye! :)

  7. My Peace River Hospital internship in pediatrics ended a couple weeks ago. I have started two other internships; one at a daycare called achievements and the other, at Peace River Hospital again but in the labor and delivery unit. I will be switching between these two internships every other day. Both of my internships are with other students in our internship class. I go to achievements with Jessica and Peace River with Abby.
I went to the Achievements Day Care on Tuesday with Jessica and we spoke to the lady there about our schedules and what days and times we will be going there. Then we had to go to the police department to get a local law check done so that we could bring a paper back to the day care for proof that neither of us have a criminal background. This is done as a safety precaution and the paperwork has to be on file before we can start working with the children.
Yesterday I went to Peace River for the first time as well. I checked in, received my observer name tag and was introduced to some of the nurses. It was a slow day at the hospital so Abby just gave me a tour of the Labor and Delivery Floor and showed me where everything is. She showed me the locker room (we have to change into scrubs here), she showed me the post partum section (where the mothers go after the baby is born, the NICU (the neonatal intensive care unit), the operating room (where C-sections are done), and the rooms where the babies are born.
I really wanted to see a baby being born but I guess it was better that the first day was slow. With such a slow day, I was able to be introduced to unfamiliar things and get the hang of how things are done in this unit.

  8. That sounds really good. Sounds like your internships started out good.Hope it gets even better. So why you wanna see a baby being born? Is it something you think you really want to do?

  9. I haven't been back to my Peace River Internship in labor and delivery yet. I've been going to the Achievements Day Care Internship instead. This was my first week actually working with the children. I went Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday. These past few days have just been me getting introduced to the kids and learning their schedule and what they do during the day. I was assigned to work with Mrs. Shelia and her group of kids. She is the teacher for a two year old classes at the daycare. By the time I get to my internship, the kids are taking naps. Nap time usually finishes around two, then the kids all go potty and we go outside for snack and then to play on the playground. Its been pretty fun the last few days. The kids have so much energy and they are extremely eager to learn new things. I really like working with them. Being on the playground is the most fun part. I like running around with them. They always think of new things to do and they have crazy imaginations. I was really surprised though to learn that their day is so incredibly organized and that the teachers have to make lesson plans. I didn't realize the kids schedules were that strict and that the teachers have to follow a curriculum.

  10. Yesterday was my first day back to my internship after spring break. I went to the daycare internship. I always get there when the kids are napping so this time I brought a book with me to read until they woke up. It’s so funny when the kids wake up. They are supposed to stay on their mats until everyone wakes up. Of course they never listen. They constantly have to be redirected. Usually they always get books off the shelf and bring them to me to read. They absolutely love being read to. The most colorful books keep their interest the longest. Once they get bored with one book they bring me even more until there is a large pile on the floor next to me.
At snack time yesterday the kids had apple juice and rice krispies. I was surprised when some of the kids didn't like the sweet snack; I figured they would have loved it. For the few that wouldn't even touch the rice krispies treats, Mrs. Shelia gave them some fruit loops instead. This was really funny because the other children who didn’t have fruit loops were getting really upset. So then she had to give all the kids some fruit loops or a war would have started. =P
We also got a new student, Cheyenne. She was really shy and quiet because she wasn't use to the activities and the schedule yet. I tried to stay with her as much as I could to make her feel comfortable. She warmed up to me very quickly and wouldn't stop following me around. I felt really bad leaving her when it was time for me to go. =/

  11. Aw, that's sweet that Cheyanne liked you. You seem to really take an interest in kids. I think you would do well as a nurse because you genuinely care about the patients.

  12. Yesterday I went to my Peace River Internship. I still haven’t seen any baby deliveries! I am extremely anxious to see one. It’s almost frustrating at times because it is really hard to get the right timing with this internship. It isn’t like I can walk in and say “hey everyone I’m here, go into labor and have your baby in this short two hour time period before I leave!!” (hah I wish it was that simple. =P ) It seems like every time there is a delivery or a C section scheduled, it is either before I get there or after I leave. This part of the internship is really teaching me patience. While I am waiting (and hoping!) for a baby to be born, it gives me the opportunity to see the smaller (& still very important of course) tasks that the nurses must do. The nurse that I mostly shadow is Allison. She is actually a surgical tech and assists mostly with the C-sections. She answers a lot of the questions I have. Yesterday at the hospital, she showed Abby and me how to set up a table. Of course it’s not just a regular table, it’s the table that has all the tools and equipment the doctor will need when the baby is being delivered. I never realized how organized the tools must be and how important it is to make sure everything is done properly. The most important thing I learned is your body and your hands must be completely sterile when working with any items that will be used in the delivery process. When I first get into my internship I have to change into scrubs that the hospital provides. The hospital specifically cleans these scrubs to sterilize them for all the nurses’ in the labor and delivery unit to use. In certain places, like the OR (operating room), I have to wear a hair net over my pony tail and booties that cover my shoes so that there is no chance of germs being brought into the sterile areas. Wearing the scrubs, booties, and hairnet is pretty fun too because I get to see what I would look like if I was a real nurse!! :D

  13. On Monday I went to my day care internship. This week is bug week so Mrs. Sheila was trying to come up with art ideas for the kids. It is required that they do an art project everyday and that different materials are used. This means that they can’t just paint or color everyday, the projects have to be different. Mrs. Shelia comes up with ideas that involve gluing and pasting, coloring, water painting, finger painting, and using pipe cleaners and felt materials. Sometimes coming up with ideas can be very difficult. The teachers use art books and ideas from the internet to come up with projects and then revise them to make it easy enough for the children to do. All the classes do art projects and although the teachers try to do different things, if they really get stuck trying to come up with ideas that correlate to the week’s theme they share ideas.
The artwork they do is always so cute. Unfortunately their art time is earlier in the day so I don’t get to help them with their projects but I do get to see the finished result. : ) While the kids were sleeping I was looking through books with art ideas. One specific book was all about things you can make with fuzzy pipe cleaners. I never realized how many cool things could be made and just how easy they were! So while the kids slept I tried out one of the ideas. I used three pipe cleaners and easily made the cutest flower that had six pink petals, a yellow center, and a green stem. I have never been very creative so I was proud of myself. =P Of course once the kids woke up they all wanted to hold my flower and play with it. They are still learning how to share so I had to keep the peace between nine two year olds and one flower. Overall though it was a fun day. : )

  14. Today I went to my Day Care internship. When I got there almost all of the children were awake which is unusual because they usually sleep until 2:00pm. Today was a really busy day there. The kids seemed to be like all over the place and more energetic than usual. Mrs. Sheila definitely had her hands full, so while she helped some of the kids go potty, I helped the other kids clean up their mats. After nap time the kids have to put their little pillows and blankets into the bag that has their name on it. Usually I hold the bag open while they put their nap time stuff away (it is too difficult for them to do on their own). The kids also love to help whenever they can so while one child would spray the mat they slept on, another would wipe it off with a rag. Helping me clean up the mats kept them busy and out of trouble.
Snack time today was pretty interesting to say the least; the kids had pink apple sauce and vanilla wafers. The kids eat their afternoon snack outside at the picnic tables. The daycare has been having problems with bees though so every time the kids see any type of bug they scream out “bee!” One of the kids even started crying when a fly landed on the table so I had to comfort her and try to make her understand that flies are harmless.
After snack we went on the playground and had a lot of fun running around. Playground time is my favorite time to work with the kids. It really gives me a chance to get to know them and goof around and make them laugh. Today I even raced a few of the kids across the yard but they were too fast and I lost the race. =P

  16. That's cool that your kids actually clean up their nap areas on their own. I kind of wish mine could do that. oh and i know! that bee problem is getting horrible. One of the kids inthe room next to ours got stung last week. I hated watching her cry :(

  17. This week was a slow week. At my peace river internship there was nothing going on. Me and abby just hung out the whole time and did make up work. i have gotten really behing in this class so having the free time was actually nice. i was able to use it as a study hall. i also used that time to read the newspaper article about swine flu!! ahhhh :)

  18. At my day care internship on wed i had a lot of fun. the kids had slices of turkey and cheese for lunch. Then we went on the playground. It was actually really funny because when we were inside in their classroom they were all running around and going crazy but once we were on the playground in the big open space they were all calm and wanted to just sit down in one spot and chill. the kids are absolutely adorable. i sat down on the grass with them and they all just surrounded me. Its so cute how mushy they are. it makes me wonder if i was like that as a kid. :)

  19. Wait, i dont understand you switched fields, when did this happen? what is it exacltly that you want to do? but i could definently see you doing something involving young children, your so fun and peppy. Lol, and kids are so amazingly cute , and funny!

  21. Your day care internship reminds me of when I help with summer camp at my church. I'm usually with the 5 and 6 year olds, and boyy, can it be hectic after nap time! We also have snack time outside, but I can't recall any problems with bees =p

I agree with Chelsea about Cheyenne. Kids are so adorable when they warm up to you. There's a girl Brienna in the class I intern with who always has to give me a hug when I arrive :)

Andd with peace river, i think it's really cool that you get to see how they prep for a c section and having all of the right tools. Wouldn't that be awesome if someone had her baby when you were there?! haha.

  22. I went to my Peace River Internship for the last time last week. My last day was just like all the others--slow. I’m disappointed that I didn’t get the chance to see the birth of a baby or a C section. I spent my two hours there doing school work and treating the time like a study hall.
Oh well, I guess there will be other opportunities down the road to do this kind of stuff again. Although I didn’t get to see much, I still enjoyed pediatrics better. In labor and Delivery I realized you mostly work with the parents because the once the baby is born they aren’t in the hospital very long. I really liked being able to work with the children in the pediatric unit, I was able to actually interact with them and make them feel more comfortable.

  23. I love my Day Care Internship so much. The kids have really warmed up to me. I have a blast every time I go there. The kids are so funny too. They say the funniest things. Last week at my internship I was wearing a shirt over a cami so I had two shirts on. One of the little girls lift up the shirt on the top layer and looked up and was like “where are your boobies?” It was so hilarious. I was really glad I was wearing two shirts. It was really hard to be serious without laughing to explain to her that you’re not supposed to lift up other people’s clothing.

  24. I went to my Day Care Internship at Achievements this whole week. On Wednesday it was raining outside so after the children woke up from their naps they ate their snacks under the awning on the picnic tables. Once they were done eating instead of playing on the playground outside, we went to what they call the “gym.” I really liked playing with the kids in this area. The gym is an indoor play area, so it was a smaller space for the kids to run around but it was much easier to interact with them. Playtime is my favorite part of the internship; it really gives me the opportunity to spend time with the kids on an individual basis. This is the time when I really learn their personalities and am able see what kind of demeanor they have. I have been able to tell apart the clingy children from the over-dramatic ones and tell apart more independent children from the more feisty and sensitive ones.

  25. Yesterday was the last day of my internship at Achievements. I was really sad to go. Even in the short time I have been at the Day Care, I have developed strong relationships with the children. I really love spending time with them and I feel bad leaving them now that the school year is over. I talked to the manager of the day care and put in an application for employment. I am hoping they will get back to me and I can work there over the summer. Although I really need a summer job, working here would be really awesome because then I could spend the summer with the kids before going off to college. I really enjoyed the time I spent there and I wish I had done this internship from the beginning.

  26. Im sorry that you didnt get to see any deliveries. i will admitt that i was disappointed myself. this quarter was more of hands on than observing deliveries. i hope you still learned something from Allison and the OR
