My internship yesterday was a lot better than how I had imagined it would be. As soon as i got there the receptionist gave me the "grand tour" of the office and treated me very kindly. I was then introduced to Doctor Anarumo, who struck me as a very serious lady but was in fact very funny and easy going. Her intelligence was shocking. I was also introduced to an LPN who i had the pleasure of talking to and working with. The rest of the day I followed the doctor into the rooms with the patients and, at first, just observed and did small things like listen to the patient's heartbeat and take their pulse. After a while, however, Dr. Anarumo let me give my own diagnosis of what the child might have had and even let me write prescriptions. I saw things ranging from children getting shots to babies with peeling skin coming in to get treatment. I really enjoyed it and just from that first day I'm sure that i want to go into the medical field.
In my internship yesterday i did pretty much the same things that I did on day one. The big difference was that towards the end of the day, a mexican woman came into the office who barely spoke any english. Her daughter had asthma and she was worried because the medication the doctor had prescribed her wasn't working. Doctor Anarumo seemed to be having a hard time trying to speak to her so I started speaking to her in Spanish. The doctor had no idea I spoke spanish. She was very glad that I could translate for her and explain to the woman exactly what she was saying. I was really glad that my bilingual abilities actually came in handy and it felt nice that the patient's mother really appreciated it and thanked me a lot.
Wow Jessica sounds like you have yourself a very hands on internship!!!! I wish my internship was more like this!! Do you think that you may want to pursue a career in this field of work? I understand that you are in Anatomy curently and it would not surprsie me at all if you ended up becoming a doctor, you have the intelligence and drive that any doctor would need to succeed.
Last week on wednesday I was surprised to see so many cases of Mersa in the office! It was pretty disgusting to watch the doctor squeeze the puss out of each kid's sore in order to culture the infection to make sure it was actually Mersa. It was realllyyy interesting though and i kind of even liked it. It was a little scary because the first girl actually fainted! I caught her though and the doctor really appreciated that.
Last week on Friday was a pretty average day in the office. There were a lot of little kids with viral infections and simple colds. It was cool to see how much i've already learned though. I can basically diagnose these children and tell them what medications to take myself! I love getting to see the kids too! Working with them is so fun. They always have cool things to say even though theyre constantly coughing all over you and stuff. :)
Monday I was actually a little lazy in going to my internship but once i got there i didn't want to leave! I ended up staying there for an extra hour and a half. There were a lot of Mersa infected kids there from Heron Creek Middle, some asthma patients, and other simple viruses and colds. I dont know why but even just these common things kept me interested sooo much. I had fun :)
Cool. Sounds like you really like your internship. Its a lot of hands on, i think that a lot. I like how you get to work with the kids. So it this something you want to do with your life.
Eww...mersa infected kids? What happened at Heron Creek? Sounds like you are getting a lot of hands on expereience right now that current doctors WISH they had when they were younger. I can't stand being around people in a hospital but I guess you like it a lot. Continue the good work!
Wow, it sounds like you're really contributing to the office. It's wonderful that you were able to translate for the doctor; that must have been a huge help. Also, I'm glad you know for sure that you want to go into the medical field now. Now that you're getting the experience you can judge the career much better.
I think it's pretty awesome how you were able to translate in Spanish for the Doctor. I bet she was happy to have you there! Despite all the disgusting things you have seen, like the kid with the sores that had to have the puss squeezed out (eww), you seem very excited and interested to be a nurse which is great :)
Last week on thursday there were a lot of older people in the office. My doctor treats people from ages birth through 21, but i hadn't actually thought about seeing people this old there. It was really funny seeing them in those colorful and cutesy looking rooms. They looked incredibly out of place! What I really enjoyed was seeing a medical student from USF there. She had basically already diagnosed hereself witht the flu. I thougt that was cool! It even kind of made me reconsider whether i want to be a nusrse or a doctor. The medical intern that works there with me gave me so many tips just in case i wanted to become a pediatrician in the end.
Monday was a very normal day. I saw i five day old newborn though :D She was the cutest thing in the world! This only strengthened my love for kids even more. Even when kids cry and yell, whether it be from fear of shots or even just a temper tantrum, i enjoy working with them. I know im going into a field with kids FOR SURE.
Tuesday was very average. I followed Doctor Bev around and chatted with Amanda, the medical intern about my future again. They're really starting to make me change my mind. Im confused! That's really bad too because i think i should be almost sure of what i want to do by now :(
it sounds like you get alot of hands on experience at your intership site which will help you so much if you choose to pursue this as a career. it also sounds like your learning alot, i hope things keep going well for you :)
Ummm... Jessica I understand that you feel as if you should know what you want to do by now but it's okay because most people don't figure out exactly what the right career is for them to a capital T until college where they sometimes experience different things, and do different majors and internships inorder to figure it out. I once wanted to be a pediatric endocrinologist but I realized that I liked the idea of becoming one, Had an interest but yet it wasn't my calling. I wouldn't have the self motivation and dedication to finish those long grueling years in something that I wouldn't surely be happy with in the end. I know sometimes people think of the money factor before their career happiness but I feel that is important, otherwise you would feel unfulfilled. Therefore, I am going for my passion afterall we are becoming a service economy, and I know in pursing what I truely want to do I will have the right attitude, determination and self motivation to be successful. Just reflect on the pros and cons and what you want out of this career and after achieving this how to you plan to grow to more, what is your big picture???
Aww i hope you figure out everything. But its ok if you dont know what you want to do. But its always good to be confused al least your changing your mind now.
The first day of my new internship was a little scary for me. I didn't really know what to expect from an actual daycare center since i've only ever worked in the one provided by the school. Before I even started anything there though, i had to go to the police department to get a local law check, and they took a copy of my driver's license too. I thought it was great for them to ask that of not only us, but of all of their employees. It makes the environment safer for everybody, but more importantly for the children. When i actually went in, I met Erin, the teacher for the 2 year olds I work with. All the kids were napping and so we both kinda just chatted, getting to know each other a bit. When they woke up, Erin made them all go get books while they picked up and sprayed all the mats. I sat down and immediately kids rushed over to me with what seemed like twenty different books in their little hands begging me to read to them. I loved it!!! Then we all went outside to eat snack. I found it hilarious watching all the sneaky tactics these kids had for taking each others food. Of course i had to correct them when they did things like this but i was dying of laughter on the inside :)After eating, we went outside to play on the playground. I guess i was the shiny new toy in their eyes so once again, they were all surrounding me. I enjoyed every second of it though. I think I might have been having more fun than they were! After going in, getting each of the kids some water, and cleaning up the kitchen, we went back into the classroom and let the kids play with the toys they had in there. I had to leave twenty minutes into that :(
hey your internship sounds just like mine! lol hah. my kids are so cute too. its so funny how they love to read and they bring you like a million books to read to them.
im surprised we were put in different classes though. i expected us to be together during our internship but they split us up :/
oh well. its still fun though. & my kids are totally cuterrrrr than yours =P
Wednesday I went in and the kids were napping. I realized that the schedule is the same every day. I cut up some beaks out of orange construction paper for the baby chicks the kids had made earlier in the day and some easter eggs until they woke up. After that, I read them all 3 different books while Miss.Jenna, another worker there, did Diaper checks(except on a little girl named Madison, she's potty trained and proud of it!). We went out and had a snack of string cheese honey grain crackers, and milk. After thaat we played on the playgrouond. The slide was the favorite on that day. They all ran towards there once they saw me helping Madison up (by the way it seems that she's my new bestfriend haha). After they got tired of the slide however, they all tried to jump into one of the little police cars. That didn't go so well. There were tears, screaming, etc. But I think I handled it pretty well :) I was strict, and fair, but not cruel. After i settled that, we went inside for some water. A little boy named Edwin kept knocking everyone else's cup over, so once again there was crying, hitting, fighting, etc. Everyone of us tried to correct him but he wouldn't listen. He had to hold Mrs. Erin's hand for the rest of play time. I left shortly after we went inside to play.
Last week on tuesday was so fun. I played with Edwin and had to make sure he stayed on task for the whole time i was there. Although he is a handful at times, he's kind of my favorite :) Snack was hard for him because the uffin he was eating kept crumbling all over him and the table. He got tired of it and went to play on the playground quickly after that. We played soccer. He was soooo good! I was genuinely shocked to see how a little boy that wasn't even two years old could be so athletically inclined. We went in and i read him books until i had to leave.
Last Thursday it was a regular day. I got there while the kids were still napping, i picked up their blankets and pillows and wiped down the mats while Ms. Erin changed diapers. The kids read stories while they waited to go out to snack. They had graham crakers, bananas, and milk, and it looked so delicious! I was really hungry, so Ms. Erin actually let me have some :) We went out to the playground after snack and we played tag..kind of. They didn't really understand teh concept of actually tagging the other person. I thought it was funny. After we went back in I had to help Ms.Alex clean the bathrooms, wipe down chairs and tables, and move some toys into the back room. Taking out the trash was the worst though. All of those stinky diapers made one MASSIVE smell.
On monday the first thing i had to do when i got there was help Ms.Alex with her class, since Ms.Erin's was still napping. She has younger kids so they were a lot less active than the class Im usually with. I still liked it though. It reminded me of the daycare here at the school. I played with the kids while Alex changed diapers and then we went outside to play. There was a new little boy named Jackson. I guess it was his first day so he was veryyy upset. He cried the entire time i was there. I tried to comfort him as much as i could. During snack, he was the toughest to feed. I felt bad leaving, because he had still been crying as i walked away.
Wow Jessica, sounds like you have a lot of fun at your internship. It sounds like you have a a lot of interaction with the yougner kids and this will definately help later in life if/when you have children. In 8th grade I helped out at an aftercare at my school with my friend for some community service hours and we got to play and interactive with the kids and it was A LOT of fun.
Yesterday Ms.Erin put me on diaper duty after nap time. I had to change all 14 of the kids. Some of those kids have wayyy too much fiber in their diets! It was a little tough at first because some of the kids were cranky and wouldn't cooperate, but Ms.Ering walked me through it. I think I did pretty good :) Changing my gloves after every child and having to disinfect the changing areawas a little tiring. After they were all changed, we went and ate a snack of juice and oatmeal cookies. It was a tough situation with one of the kids. His name is Alex, and he never lets go of his binky and his little blue blanket. Ms. Lori took it away and he went crazy! He cried and cried until his mom came to pick him up. It made me sad :( I played with nevaeh on the playground too. She's so hyper! I wish i had that much energy. Corbin was attached at my hip during indoor play. I love him! He's incredibly sweet :) He favored the kitchen area the whole time, and I actually envisioned him being a chef or something when he gets older.
Hey jessica I was just woundering how you like your intern and what you got out of it so far? Its cool that u are acually getting incocled though like changing your gloves after every kid is very sanitary...lol Yet I hope you get to do much more and relieze that this is what you want to do.
My internship wednesday was very fun :) I had so much energy that I think I might have had more fun than the kids did. I got there around napt time, like usual, helped by picking up the mats , wiping them down, and then reading I'm A Little Teapot to the kids about thirty times :) After this, I helped with snack which was Graham crazkers and apple juice. I had a hard time getting one of the little new girls to eat it. She wasn't crying though she just wouldn't respond to anyone. I've also noticed she moves very slowly and always has her thumb in her mouth. I've heard Ms. Erin saying that she always has to bathe her once her parents drop her off because she smells badly of smoke. I worry a lot about her and her home life :( After snack, we played on the playground! I chased the kids, raced them, picked them up and spun them, played on the jungle gym with them, and kicked around a soccer ball for a while too. I had to break up a few little quarrels but overall it was good :)
Yesterday was scary at my internship. As soon as I got there, i saw two of the women who usually work the front desk running to the other day care building. I walked in concerned and found out a little 3 or 4 year old boy named Patrick had passed out and was not breathing. I went into Ms.Alex's room while i waited to hear news of the child and just played with the 1-2 year olds. After nap and playtime, Ms.Lori came outside and told us about the little boy. Apparently he had been napping and woke up with a nosebleed. The teacher cleaned him up, but shortly after doing so, the kid stiffened up and just passed out. I can't imagine how terrified Ms.Shannon (the teacher who was with the boy) must have been. After the ambulance came, the boy had already responded however. His mom was called to come down and apparently it wasn't the first time that had happened. She said she had taken him to the pediatrician and his condition was "normal". I found that incredibly hard to believe. This kid of thing makes me question other peoples' abilities to parent. Some people really don't care about their children and it irritates me to a point to which i hate to get to.
After the tension passed I bleached some toys, set them to dry and went back outside to find one of the kids running around with his clothes and diaper completely off! It was hilarious!!!!
My internship last Wednesday was pretty normal. It was cleaning week that week so I had to bleach the balls in the gym and some of the other equipment in there. The chairs were especially gross however. Ms. Erin said they hadn't been cleaned in two weeks! Eww!! They had crusty stuff on them. She gave me a little brush to get all the gook off...goody :/
Cleaning the bathrooms is always fun too. haha.
After finishing that I went outside to play tag with the kids. I managed to get sweaty and gross in like ten minutes of being outside before it started raining and we had to go inside. It was fun :)
Thursday last week was also very normal. The only difference was there was a new boy named Drake. I was so shocked when Ms.Jenna told me he was potty trained! She had told me to take him to the bathroom and i kind of had to think twice about what she said. None of the other kids are potty trained yet, so it took me by surprise. He did veryyy good :)
Snack went well too. They had muffins. Im not sure what type exactly, but they looked good :)
We only went outside for like five minuted before it started raining :( I was sad.
My internship yesterday was a lot better than how I had imagined it would be. As soon as i got there the receptionist gave me the "grand tour" of the office and treated me very kindly. Some people really don't care about their children and it irritates me to a point to which i hate to get to.
ReplyDeleteAfter the tension passed I bleached some toys, set them to dry and went back outside to find one of the kids running around with his clothes and diaper completely off!
ReplyDeleteCleaning the bathrooms is always fun too.
ReplyDeleteSnack went well too. They had muffins. Im not sure what type exactly, but they looked good :)
We only went outside for like five minuted before it started raining :(
I was sad.
how old was the boy? and i bet the kids must have felt cooped up because they were unable to go play outside.
